This project identified that there is a need to increase the mass limits that apply to three-axle buses and assessed the potential implications.

Background

In November 2018, transport ministers approved a gross mass limit increase for three-axle buses from 20 tonnes to 22 tonnes.

The increase takes effect on 10 December 2019 following approval of legislative amendments (Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension and Loading) National Regulation) on 2 August 2019. 

To be eligible for this increase, there are additional safety requirements to be met, which are set out in the NTC Decision Regulation Impact Statement.
