We're working with industry, governments and unions to coordinate their rollout. By ensuring technologies align, we can get trains running safely and more efficiently, helping rail play a bigger role in the nation’s economy and connecting more people to opportunities .

Australia’s rail networks each have their own standards for technologies, trains, infrastructure, operating rules and worker training. The differences come at a huge cost to safety and limits the capacity and competitiveness of rail freight. We are working on a new national approach to standards and ways of working that will drive interoperability and improve safety and efficiencies across networks.

Australia’s rail networks have 12 separate rule books and many different standards, operating rules and processes. This is a burden for workers who operate across networks. It increases training time and costs and affects safety. The NTC is working with industry to harmonise rules and training, making rail simpler, safer and better able to attract a skilled and mobile workforce.

Right now, it can take less time to build a train than it does to get it approved to run across the country. This is a major deterrent to investment and creates a barrier to moving more freight onto rail. We are working with industry and regulators to streamline and simplify the process.

Around 70,000 extra workers will be needed over the next decade to build, run and maintain expanding networks. This includes 13,000 digital specific roles to support the introduction of new technologies. We're working with governments, industry and the education sector to identify the new skillsets required, develop faster, nationally-recognised pathways to these skills and encourage new, diverse cohort of workers into rail.

We have developed a framework to ensure the safe operation of automated vehicles while they are on the road (or ‘in service’).
