National Women in Transport

The National Women in Transport initiative brings together government and industry to increase the number of women working in transport.

One way we’ll do this is through our Speaker Bureau on the National Women in Transport website.

We’ll establish partnerships and collaborate to create culture change and combat transport worker stereotypes.

Project background

In 2021, infrastructure and transport ministers directed us to establish an initiative to increase female participation in Australia’s transport workforce.

National Women in Transport was launched in March 2022. It is coordinated by us and supported by:

The current focus of the National Women in Transport initiative is to build and promote the Speaker Bureau to showcase the women leading transport in Australia.

The initiative will also expand the calendar of events and other resources to help increase the number of women working in transport.

Aim of the initiative

Through National Women in Transport, we hope to increase the number of women working in transport.

Currently:

  • Australia’s transport sector is the third most male dominated sector by employment behind construction and mining.
  • Women make up around 27.4% of Australia’s transport workforce.
  • Only 4.5% of transport CEOs are women - well below the Australian average of 20%.
  • The gender pay gap in the transport sector is higher than the national average – 15.9% as against 13.9%.

We’ll establish partnerships and collaborate to create culture change and combat transport worker stereotypes.
