Australian Road Rules: past reviews & amendments

The NTC is responsible for reviewing and updating the Australian Road Rules and seeks advice from the Australian Road Rules Maintenance Group, consisting of representatives of road traffic authorities and police from the states and territories and the Commonwealth.

Reviews

2015

The Transport and Infrastructure Council (the Council) approved the 11th amendment package on 6 November 2015, which we are currently incorporating into an update version of the AARs.

As with all amendment packages, the amendments in the 11th Amendment Package (if approved by the council) will only take effect in each state and territory once they are adopted into the law of that state or territory.

2013

In 2013, a draft evaluation report was released for public consultation. The report was informed by the responses to the 2011 paper and additional policy research.  The NTC's final recommendations were then proposed in a final policy paper that ministers approved in November 2013.

2011

This review focused on ways to improve the process of developing and implementing the Australian Road Rules and Australian Vehicle Standards Rules. The review process began in 2011 with the release of the Review of the Australian Road Rules and Australian Vehicle Standards Rules discussion paper for public consultation. The paper posed a series of questions about how the rules could be improved to ensure their continuing effectiveness.
