Australian Light Vehicle Standards Rules

The Australian Light Vehicle Standards Rules (ALVSRs) are model rules that regulate in-service vehicle standards for light vehicles. They form the basis for each state and territory to implement in their own Vehicle Standards Rules.

The ALVSRs cover areas such as light vehicle emissions and car safety standards. They are based on the Australian Design Rules (the ADRs) that are developed and administered by the Commonwealth. The ALVSRs require vehicles that are subject to ADRs when they are being built or imported to continue to comply with the ADRs. They also have combination requirements, such as some dimensional limits, which are not specified in the ADRs.

We review the Australian Light Vehicle Standards Rules each year.

Background

The ALVSRs were developed in consultation with relevant stakeholders. This included road agencies, automotive industry bodies and representatives, police and road safety experts, motoring organisations and members of the public.

ALVSRs are model rules that do not have any legal effect in and of themselves. The ALVSRs form the basis for each state and territory to implement in their own Vehicle Standards Rules.

Previous rules

The ALVSRs 2015 replaced the Australian Vehicle Standards Rules 1999 (AVSRs).

Australian heavy vehicle standards are now included in the Heavy Vehicle (Vehicle Standards) National Regulation (HV-VSNR). As a result, the AVSRs were redrafted to become the ALVSRs and only apply to light vehicles.
