Enhancements to freight productivity will be essential to ensure Australia can meet the increasing demand for transport from a rapidly growing, aging and urbanising population.

Productivity

Freight transport plays a significant role in the Australian economy. Infrastructure Australia has forecast that between 2010 and 2030:

  • truck traffic will increase 50 per cent
  • rail freight will jump 90 per cent
  • the number of containers crossing the nation’s wharfs will increase 150 per cent.

Enhancing freight productivity is essential to ensure Australia can meet the increasing demand for transport from a growing, aging and urbanising population. Improved productivity will help us to not just improve the economy, but also improve safety and environmental outcomes - because it can improve transport efficiency and decrease fuel use.
