Purpose

The Rail Safety National Law (RSNL) is periodically reviewed to ensure the law and subordinate regulations remain contemporary, nationally-consistent, efficient, effective, and aligned with agreed policy.

Next steps

Ministers approved our recommendations to amend the RSNL at their November 2016 meeting.

The amendments are expected to commence by 1 July 2017.

Background

Working with our stakeholders, the NTC leads the maintenance of the RSNL which governs rail safety nationally, including all aspects of rail safety regulation. The RSNL is administered by the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator which began operations in January 2013.

The NTC has ongoing responsibility for the maintenance of the RSNL, comprising primary legislation and supporting regulations that commenced in January 2013.
