Purpose

The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) is periodically reviewed to ensure the law, and subordinate regulations, remain contemporary, nationally-consistent, efficient, effective, and aligned with agreed policy.

Next steps

To identify, develop and refine amendments to the HVNL that contribute to the purpose and submit a draft amendment package to the Transport and Infrastructure Senior Officials Committee (TISOC) in April 2017, and to have those amendments agreed by ministers and implemented by Queensland, the host jurisdiction.

We expect that ministers will consider our recommendations at their May 2017 meeting.

Background

Led by the NTC, the HVNL is the result of a collaborative process involving industry and government to develop a nationally consistent approach to heavy vehicle legislation and regulation based on the model laws.

The NTC has ongoing responsibility for the maintenance of the HVNL, comprising primary legislation and supporting regulations that commenced in February 2014.

For more information, or to access a copy of the HVNL or Regulations, please visit the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR).
