Title: Pathway to safe and sustainable transport productivity
Article Date: 17 Jun 2009

Deputy Chairman of the National Transport Commission Dr Ian Johnston AM told an international conference in Michigan that truck productivity can help stimulate the economy, while slowing growth in truck numbers, reducing vehicle crashes and lowering emissions.

“The wide national roll out of B-doubles … has resulted in more than one million less carbon emissions a year,” he said.

Performance Based Standards reform gives governments the tools to manage genuine road safety and infrastructure risks and build confidence in productivity reform.

“We are now working on improvements to drive wider take-up of the PBS reform by industry. The options include ‘blueprinting’ new designs and self-certification by manufacturers to reduce upfront assessment costs,” he added.

Dr Johnston also stressed the importance of a more integrated approach to transport through national reform in road, rail, ports, planning and passenger transport.
