Title: Stay safe during the holiday period
Article Date: 19 Dec 2008

The National Transport Commission (NTC) thanks all its stakeholders in the transport industry for their constructive engagement in national reform in 2008 and passes on its best wishes for a safe Christmas.

“Professional drivers are all too aware: there are added risks on the roads at this time of year,” said NTC Senior Manager Safety Dr Jeff Potter.

“Staying alert and managing fatigue is still crucial, whether you’re in your truck using a work diary or driving the family to your holiday destination. Getting a good night’s sleep, planning ahead, and taking rest breaks are the best ways to prevent fatigue.

“And no matter how tight the deadline, it is never urgent enough to risk lives by speeding.”

With about 100 crashes a year between trains and road vehicles, Mr Potter said level crossing safety is another big issue.

“Rail timetables may change during the holiday period so no matter how well you know the level crossing, stay alert and obey the signs and warning signals at all level crossings.

“The transport industry is the backbone of the nation and we thank you for your ongoing efforts to keep people and freight moving safely.”
