A more strategic national approach to rail safety data collection is essential to focus tightly on the needs of government and industry
The National Transport Commission (NTC) has released a draft National Strategy for Rail Safety Data for public comment today. The strategy has been developed by the NTC in collaboration with key stakeholder groups.
Although there are already substantial collections of rail safety data, NTC Chief Executive Nick Dimopoulos said information gaps could limit the understanding of the causes of incidents.
“Currently, there is no strategic national framework to identify what useful data we need to collect,” he said. “Better focused national data that is timely, reliable, comparable and nationally consistent will improve the identification and management of key safety risks."
Mr Dimopoulos said implementing an agreed national data framework will require a systematic approach and long term commitment from all parties.
The project has been endorsed by the Australian Transport Council and is consistent with the Council of Australian Governments’ decision in 2006 to establish a nationally consistent approach to rail safety regulation.

The NTC is seeking public comment on the document by 16 November 2007.
